Mary Gysin Leonard, a desperate Swiss immigrant to the Oregon Territory, is accused of murdering her husband when she fights back against his cruel treatment. The campaign to prove her innocence and fight for the rights of other women take her straight into the brutal world of the frontier West when she decides to learn the US laws and become a lawyer herself, making her the first female member of the Oregon bar before women even have the right to vote.
